Hands-On Workshops

This free workshop is open to PVCA attendees and anyone else interested in mosquitoes, ticks, and their management. A crash course on mosquitoes, ticks, and pesticide applicator personal protective equipment, this course will offer three hours of hands-on learning, including time using scopes.

This workshop has been approved for Core, Category 16, and Category 18 Pennsylvania pesticide recertification training credits.

A crash course on ectoparasites and vectors crucial for both human and animal health. Participants gain hands-on experience identifying common ectoparasites — ticks, fleas, mites, and lice — and learn about their diversity and ecological roles. The workshop covers safe collection techniques, specimen handling and preservation, and surveillance methods including mosquito traps and tick collection tools. A key focus is assessing vector-borne disease risks and developing strategies to prevent bites and disease transmission.

Pesticide applicator continuing education credits will be available.

This hands-on train-the-trainer event prepares Extension educators, veterinarians, agricultural service workers, and other providers to teach about vectors and vector-borne diseases. Participants will practice vector identification, safety and biosecurity, and leave with practical resources and tools for education and outreach..
