Bites to Insights: A Wildlife Biologist’s Guide to Wildlife Ectoparasites and Vector-Borne Diseases

The Wildlife Parasites and Vectors workshop provided wildlife professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify ectoparasites encountered in wildlife. Participants developed an understanding of arthropod collection methods, pathogen screening, and occupational risks posed by vectors and how to mitigate them, and left with resources to expand their knowledge.

Hands-on Ectoparasite and Vector Identification, Collection, and Surveillance Training

This workshop provided crash course on ectoparasites and vectors. Participants gained practical, hands-on experience identifying common ectoparasites (such as ticks, fleas, mites, and lice) and learning about their diversity and ecological roles. The workshop will cover techniques for safely collecting ectoparasites from animal hosts, focused on accurate specimen handling and preservation. Additionally, participants explored surveillance methods used to monitor vector populations, including mosquito traps and tick collection tools.
