Mosquito Gravid Trap Infusion Evaluation
Evaluating horse manure infusions in gravid mosquito traps and training Student Training Network interns in mosquito surveillance across central Pennsylvania.
About This Project
Gravid mosquito traps are widely used in surveillance programs to capture host-seeking, blood-fed female mosquitoes that are seeking standing water to lay eggs. The traditional infusion used in these traps is a hay-water mixture. While effective, this method has limitations in attracting certain species and may not perform equally well across all habitat types. Horse manure infusion offers a potentially more versatile and locally sourced alternative, but its efficacy relative to hay-water infusions across different environments has not been systematically evaluated.
This project evaluates whether horse manure infusion improves trap capture rates and species diversity compared to the traditional hay-water method. Study sites include pastures with and without large animals to help determine whether the presence of livestock and horses, which produce substantially more CO₂ through respiration than smaller animals, is associated with higher mosquito abundance. If so, this would suggest that CO₂ output from large animals may be a key driver of mosquito activity in agricultural settings, with implications for both trap placement strategies and public health risk assessment in livestock areas.
The project also provides hands-on training for Student Training Network interns at Penn State University in the operation of gravid traps and CO₂-baited miniature light traps.
What Are the Goals of This Project?
Evaluating Trap Efficacy Across Habitat Types
The overall goal of this project is to evaluate and compare the efficacy of horse manure infusions with the traditional hay-water infusions used in gravid mosquito traps across three different habitats: livestock pastures and paddocks, non-livestock agricultural fields, and sylvatic environments in central Pennsylvania. The abundance and diversity of mosquitoes collected by the different attractants will be evaluated to determine whether this type of infusion would be effective in targeting specific mosquito species or more effective in certain habitat types.
Specific Objectives
Evaluate Horse Manure Infusions in Gravid Traps
Horse manure-baited and hay-water-baited Reiter-Cummings gravid mosquito traps will be set at multiple sites within each habitat throughout Centre and Huntingdon counties, PA. Traps will be set for 24 hours weekly in 2025 and 2026 to compare attractant efficacy by habitat type.
Assess Identification Methodologies
Mosquitoes collected in traps will be morphologically identified at Penn State University before being sent to the University of Delaware to be used in the "Assessing methodologies for large-scale mosquito identification and surveillance" project carried out by VectorED Network colleagues.
Partner project: Specimens will feed directly into evaluation work at the University of Delaware, strengthening cross-institutional collaboration within the VectorED Network.
Train Student Training Network Interns in Mosquito Surveillance
Training will be provided to Student Training Network interns at Penn State University on the operation of gravid traps and CO₂-baited miniature light traps, building hands-on field skills in mosquito surveillance and vector monitoring methods.
